Look Lively, Blake Style

by Eighty Jane on July 28, 2010

Gossip Girl star Blake Lively has built notoriety as much for her style as for her lead roll as Serena van der Woodsen on the hit TV show. The show itself has garnered some major attention for it’s strong fashion point of view, but even off-screen Lively’s wardrobe tends to get people all worked up. The blond ingenue is known for showing off her mile-long legs in short skirts and dresses and recently she caused a stir by wearing a super low-cut top by Preen to a Comic Con event in San Diego, CA (pictured left). Though she certainly upped the vamp factor from what the shirt looked like on the runway, I think Blake’s slim figure helps her pull it off without looking trashy. What do you think?

The Preen shirt certainly isn’t for everyone, but casual Blake style – on the set and on the street – is chic and fun in a way that a lot of people can try. Her character Serena is regularly styled in high end pieces combined in an uptown-meets-downtown way. [click to continue…]

by Eighty Jane on July 19, 2010

Slogging through 95-degree humidity in the middle of July might not be the time when you want to be thinking about the layers of fall clothing, but right now is actually prime time to start planning your cool weather wardrobe. And you don’t even have to wait for store to put out their new stuff to start shopping! Instead, take advantage of the big summer sales going on right now and pick up some key pieces that you can wear now AND later, when it get’s a bit chillier.

Safari style was big for Summer 2010. The easy pieces are great for looking sharp while being dressed down and the color palette is super easy to wear and accessorize. Rest assured that this trend isn’t going anywhere! So feel free to shop for pieces with shoulder epaulettes, buttoned tabs on the sleeves, and cargo styles. White, khaki, pale blue and army green are key colors to keep this style looking neutral, but fresh. As the temps go down wear with cardigans or bomber jackets to complete the look and stay warm.

Celebrity Trends 2010: Aviator Sunglasses

by Eighty Jane on June 4, 2010

Move over Wayfarer, there’s a new shape in town! For quite a while now the default celebrity sunglasses were those boxy little 80s-reminicient Ray-Bans. And while they were cute on some, the complete saturation of the style made it a little bit predictable (i.e. boring).

Thankfully, the tide is turning and and celebs are opting for [click to continue…]

Chanel Resort 2011 – Runway Trend Report

by Eighty Jane on May 14, 2010

There’s been much talk lately about the so-called “democratization” of fashion. That is, fashion has become less an arena solely for elites and celebrities and more about people at large. These days, anyone with an internet connection can see fashion shows as soon as magazine editors see them; and in many cases they can by designer clothing at their local Target store. There are still a few facets of fashion, however, that cater to a very exclusive of group of style devotees. One of them is haute couture, the other is the resort season. [click to continue…]

Ahhh, fashion magazines: those bastions of virtually unattainable beauty. As fantasy-ridden as they are, if you love fashion, you probably love to at least flip through some of the many style glossies on the newsstand. One of the most intriguing parts of every issue are the fashion editorials. Their purpose is to inform the reader of what’s current in fashion and to give inspiration on how to dress. Yet if you look at the fine print – that is, the clothing credits – on these spreads you’ll find that the clothing is pretty well out of reach for the average woman. For most of us, we might be able to splurge on one designer item that matches what we see in the pages, but to mock the looks piece for piece would be a budget buster. Thankfully, the fashion world works on a “trickle down” theory, of sorts. If Marc Jacobs, Chloe, and Valentino are doing something, you can be sure contemporary labels and department store brands are going to produce something similar. So the next time you see a magazine editorial and start to gush over the clothes, just remember that you can almost always get The Look 4 Less. [click to continue…]

Get the Look: Festival Chic(k)

by Eighty Jane on April 30, 2010

One of the best things about the weather getting warmer is all the great outdoor festivals that take place during the spring and summer months. These include film festivals, art markets, and (my personal favorite) music festivals. Music and fashion are natural cohorts so the latter, especially, tends to draw a pretty stylish crowd. The key to dressing for a festival is to be easy, breezy, comfy. Remember: it’s important to be cute, but not if it makes you uncomfortable. The following styles make room for style and let you get down and funky at the fest.

CUT-OFFS
Coachella music festival is always a big celeb favorite. This year they came out in droves wearing a big Spring/Summer 2010 trend: denim cutoffs. Beyonce, Kristin Cavallari, and Lindsay Lohan opt for the itty bitty version of this style.

by Eighty Jane on April 16, 2010

Everyone knows about the LBD (little black dress). It’s an essential component for any women’s wardrobe. What some of us forget, though, is the LBD’s counterpart – the LWD! The little white dress is the perfect staple for the spring and summer seasons. It’s an easy go-to for those days when you’re not quite feeling inspired. On the other hand, the LWD is versatile and can be accessorized to match your personal creative spark. [click to continue…]
