Shop the Spread: “Keep it Short” – Vogue UK – June 2010

by Eighty Jane on May 12, 2010

Ahhh, fashion magazines: those bastions of virtually unattainable beauty. As fantasy-ridden as they are, if you love fashion, you probably love to at least flip through some of the many style glossies on the newsstand. One of the most intriguing parts of every issue are the fashion editorials. Their purpose is to inform the reader of what’s current in fashion and to give inspiration on how to dress. Yet if you look at the fine print – that is, the clothing credits – on these spreads you’ll find that the clothing is pretty well out of reach for the average woman. For most of us, we might be able to splurge on one designer item that matches what we see in the pages, but to mock the looks piece for piece would be a budget buster. Thankfully, the fashion world works on a “trickle down” theory, of sorts. If Marc Jacobs, Chloe, and Valentino are doing something, you can be sure contemporary labels and department store brands are going to produce something similar. So the next time you see a magazine editorial and start to gush over the clothes, just remember that you can almost always get The Look 4 Less.

In this edition we’ve got our sights on a sweet little photo story called “Keep it Short” from the June 2010 issue of Vogue UK. The first target: leopard print shorts. It’s hard to see the price in this photos, but judging from the price of other shorts on the designer’s website, these Paul Smith shorts cost is around $300. That’s a pretty hefty chunk of change to pay for any pair of shorts – let alone a pair as trendy as these are. The following options are a lot more accessible and you won’t feel bad about abandoning them once leopard print goes back out of style.

L to R: Leopard High Waisted Shorts – $42 – missselfridge.com; Purr-fect Pin-up Shorts – $94 – modcloth.com; Rebecca Minkoff Poison Ivy Denim Shorts – $125 – shopbop.com

Next up: the white motorcycle jacket. The version in the editorial is by L’Agence and costs around $1,300. Motorcycle jacket style won’t expire quite as fast as leopard print short shorts, but it still might not be worth such a big investment. The following options make some concessions on material, but they still create the same effect for a fresh summer look.

L to R: Denim motorcycle jacket – $70 – victoriassecret.com, Lauren by Ralph Lauren Denim Lawson Jacket – $140 – bloomingdales.com, NM Washed Leather Jacket -$325 – neimanmarcus.com

Lastly: neutral-colored long shorts. The ones you see above are leather and made by Hermes, so it goes without saying that they will run you an arm and a leg. However, you can fore go the leather bit and find plenty of affordable options in a khaki-colored short. If you must have leather shorts you’ll have to fork over a bit more, but you can still do wayyy better than the four grand they want for these shorts. Yep, that’s $4,000… for a pair of shorts. Who needs ‘H’s on their belt loops, anyhow?

L to R: “Perfect” Khaki Bermudas – $25 – oldnavy.gap.com, Vince Khaki Bermuda Shorts – $185 – bloomingdales.com, Bird by Juicy Couture Suede turn-up leather shorts – $450 – net-a-porter.com
