Get the Look: Biker Babe

by Eighty Jane on September 1, 2010

Leather, buckles, studs & spikes… they’re not just for Hell’s Angels anymore. Biker style is in modern fashion – and not just for tomboys and motorcycle enthusiasts. Even the girliest girls get down with a bit of biker chic. See how these celebs do it up, looking cool and not costumed.

Lauren Conrad has achieve what few reality stars have and flipped her 15 minutes of fame into genuine celebrity. The designer/author has maintained the good girl image she began with when she was known as L.C. on MTV’s the hills. A few years and a lot of paprazzi snaps later [click to continue…]

Summer Shopping for Fall Style

by Eighty Jane on July 19, 2010

Slogging through 95-degree humidity in the middle of July might not be the time when you want to be thinking about the layers of fall clothing, but right now is actually prime time to start planning your cool weather wardrobe. And you don’t even have to wait for store to put out their new stuff to start shopping! Instead, take advantage of the big summer sales going on right now and pick up some key pieces that you can wear now AND later, when it get’s a bit chillier.

Safari style was big for Summer 2010. The easy pieces are great for looking sharp while being dressed down and the color palette is super easy to wear and accessorize. Rest assured that this trend isn’t going anywhere! So feel free to shop for pieces with shoulder epaulettes, buttoned tabs on the sleeves, and cargo styles. White, khaki, pale blue and army green are key colors to keep this style looking neutral, but fresh. As the temps go down wear with cardigans or bomber jackets to complete the look and stay warm.

Ahhh, fashion magazines: those bastions of virtually unattainable beauty. As fantasy-ridden as they are, if you love fashion, you probably love to at least flip through some of the many style glossies on the newsstand. One of the most intriguing parts of every issue are the fashion editorials. Their purpose is to inform the reader of what’s current in fashion and to give inspiration on how to dress. Yet if you look at the fine print – that is, the clothing credits – on these spreads you’ll find that the clothing is pretty well out of reach for the average woman. For most of us, we might be able to splurge on one designer item that matches what we see in the pages, but to mock the looks piece for piece would be a budget buster. Thankfully, the fashion world works on a “trickle down” theory, of sorts. If Marc Jacobs, Chloe, and Valentino are doing something, you can be sure contemporary labels and department store brands are going to produce something similar. So the next time you see a magazine editorial and start to gush over the clothes, just remember that you can almost always get The Look 4 Less. [click to continue…]

Get the Look: Festival Chic(k)

by Eighty Jane on April 30, 2010

One of the best things about the weather getting warmer is all the great outdoor festivals that take place during the spring and summer months. These include film festivals, art markets, and (my personal favorite) music festivals. Music and fashion are natural cohorts so the latter, especially, tends to draw a pretty stylish crowd. The key to dressing for a festival is to be easy, breezy, comfy. Remember: it’s important to be cute, but not if it makes you uncomfortable. The following styles make room for style and let you get down and funky at the fest.

CUT-OFFS
Coachella music festival is always a big celeb favorite. This year they came out in droves wearing a big Spring/Summer 2010 trend: denim cutoffs. Beyonce, Kristin Cavallari, and Lindsay Lohan opt for the itty bitty version of this style.

Finding Shoes Online

by Jessica on November 16, 2009

You may have ventured into trying to purchase shoes from an online retailer. My personal experience has led me to believe that online shoe shopping is more of an art form.

Whether shopping in person or online, the first task is to find a pair of shoes that you are interested in purchasing. I’ll tip my hat to internet retailers, because they have the edge in terms of convenience. (Yes, that will soon include us at Shopparel once our store launches later this year.) I’ll confess I’m a lazy shopper, so browsing so thousands of shoes while sitting on my couch is quite the treat. Let’s be honest, when shopping in person, most apparel stores have less shoes than in the average woman’s closet. Also once you find a pair you are interested in, you have to ask the employees if they carry your size. By the time an employee is free to help you out and return with your selected shoe size, your mall entourage has already moved on to the food court.

The most obvious downside of shopping online is finding a pair that fits. Shoes are not like shirts, where I know my t-shirt size and I rarely have any issues purchasing shirts online. Depending on what type of shoe it is for (walking, work, style) I can often conclude what size fits my foot and go from there. Also look for websites that contain customer reviews or discussions about fitment issues (Many of our shoe partners have this feature). Also, look for online apparel retailers that offer free return shipping and convenient return labels. We recommend purchasing the two closest sizes and returning the pair that does not fit. Premium retailers such as Macy’s and Nordstrom’s usually let you return the product in their stores as well.

Don’t let online shopping get you down! After all, online shopping is about to become more convienent with the launch of our decision engine. We will recommend shoes that fit your style and budget, and give you helpful hints along the way. Be sure to get on our email list so you can come check us out on launch day! Happy shoe shopping! Leather: A Style that Never Dies

by Mallary on November 7, 2009

Men and women are all fans of leather. Over the last year we have seen leather take over every store and become popular between both genders. From jackets, to skirts, to gloves and purses, the possibilities are endless.  Leather used to seem like it was a biker theme (Harley Crowd) and only meant for people with a specific style. I have been proven wrong. I recently went and bought a leather jacket and I love it, I wear it with anything, and I now I’m obsessed with anything leather. Leather now does not have to have the same rebellious look, but better, you can make it look how you want it to look. Leather has been taken to a more personal level and this change seems to be becoming more and more popular.

Starting in the 1980’s leather jackets were a huge hit with men, and now more then twenty years later it’s finally coming back! For men a leather jacket can make any outfit, and its a plus that you can wear it with almost anything. Although the style does not seem to have the same tough look it used to, because leather jackets are now more for style. However, it can give you an edge, and we know all boys like that. Not only do they give you an edge, but they are comfortable which is always a plus when it comes to mens clothing.

For women I do not think that leather has ever gone out of style. For a while it was not as popular, but now that this style is back you can tell every girl is excited. The popular leather dress that stars like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston pulled off is a dress that every woman craves. Plus men think tight leather is sexy on a woman. Women have a lot more versatility when it comes to leather considering that now it comes in every form of fashion. Leather boots are another big fashion statement. Now that it is getting closer to winter, boots are a must have this season. Leather can make any outfit, which is why its popularity is increasing.

Meggings: Leggings For Men

by Jessica on October 28, 2009

Male Leggings

Male Leggings

It’s about time guys caught on. Leggings seem to have taken the industry by storm, playing favorites to women of all ages, but now men are jumping on this bandwagon.  Known for their comfort and versatility, leggings act as key staples of any wardrobe whether they are worn cropped for gym attire or long for a night out on the town.  As the distinction between where men and women’s clothing is divided continues to shrink, we should have seen it coming.  First there were skinny jeans, which started off in plain colors but soon were seen in an arrangement of hues including pinks and plaids that even women shyed away from.  Deep v-necks and scarves came next, and are now simply sold in “unisex” sizes to avoid any obvious confusion, or perhaps embarrassment of being called out for wearing the opposite genders clothing.

Are men’s leggings taking it to far though? Or are they something we should just come to accept and possibly be attracted to?  It seems that in Tokyo, London, Paris and even New York this decision has already been made for us.  Men love them.  They are constantly being seen as a key article for layering, peeking out under cargos as well as short-shorts hitting both ankle and mid calf lengths.  Even top designers like Givenchy have had their male models strut their stuff down the runaways wearing solely leggings alone. It not just the plain black either, you can find them in patterns, prints and color  and I am betting in no time they will be found in various materials other than standard spandex.  Who knows, lace could be up next!  The majority of women have been voting no on this recent trend, but in this case we have to leave up to the men, we all know “Comfort is key”.
